Is Balaji Criticizing Rohit Sharma for Bumrah’s Absence from the Champions Trophy?
Former India pacer Lakshmipathy Balaji believes that despite Jasprit Bumrah’s absence in the 2025 Champions Trophy, India can rely on Mohammed Shami to lead the pace attack. Shami outbowled Bumrah in both the 2019 and 2023 World Cups, and Balaji emphasizes his crucial role, especially with the new ball, for India’s success in the tournament.

For the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, India will miss Jasprit Bumrah due to his back injury, but they will benefit from the return of pacer Mohammed Shami. Shami was a standout performer in the 2023 World Cup, finishing as the highest wicket-taker with 24 wickets in seven games. In contrast, Bumrah, although a champion bowler, was outperformed by Shami in both the 2019 and 2023 World Cups.
Former India pacer Lakshmipathy Balaji highlighted Shami’s vital role for India, especially with the new ball, stressing that his impact in the first six overs could be crucial for the team’s success in the Champions Trophy. Despite concerns over Shami’s slight rustiness following an ankle injury, Balaji expressed confidence that Shami would regain his best form as he bowls more.
In Bumrah’s absence, India’s pace attack will likely feature Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and all-rounder Hardik Pandya, with one of Arshdeep or Harshit expected to play alongside Shami. India will begin their Champions Trophy campaign on February 20 against Bangladesh, and Shami’s performance will be key to their chances of success in the tournament.
