Just before the IPL 2025 season, veteran umpire Anil Chaudhary announced his retirement from international cricket and the Indian Premier League after an illustrious career. Chaudhary, the most experienced umpire in IPL history, has officiated in 483 matches, including 12 Tests, 49 ODIs, 131 IPL games, 91 first-class, 114 List A, and 28 T20s. His final domestic appearance was the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 final, where Vidarbha beat Kerala on a first-innings lead. Internationally, his last match was India vs Australia in Rajkot in September 2023, the same venue where he made his debut in 2013.

Though retiring from major cricket, Chaudhary will umpire in T20 leagues in the UAE and the US. He has also shifted to commentary, recently covering the Champions Trophy 2025, earning praise for providing an umpire’s unique perspective. Additionally, Chaudhary is launching a YouTube channel, “Umpire’s Call by Anil Chaudhary”, and a company, “Voice & Verdict”, to train upcoming umpires.

Meanwhile, BCCI has introduced seven new Indian umpires for IPL 2025, including Swaroopanand Kannur and Abhijeet Bhattacharya, who will be mentored by S Ravi and CK Nandan. Three international umpires, Michael Gough, Chris Gaffaney, and Adrian Holdstock will also feature this season.
