India’s speedster and one of the most lethal bowlers in world cricket, Mohammed Shami, has been named in Bengal’s squad for the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy, marking his return to 50-over domestic cricket. Shami last featured in a One-Day International during the ODI World Cup 2023 final at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. In the ongoing domestic season, he recently played in the Ranji Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), where he picked up 11 wickets in nine matches and showcased his batting prowess with a quick 32* against Chandigarh in the pre-quarterfinal.
Shami’s inclusion strengthens Bengal, who are placed in Group E and will play all their league matches at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Captained by Sudip Kumar Gharami, Bengal’s squad also features pacer Mukesh Kumar, though he may miss initial games due to international commitments in Australia. Bengal’s campaign kicks off against Delhi on December 21, followed by matches against Tripura, Baroda, Kerala, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh.
Additionally, Shami’s younger brother, Mohammed Kaif, has also been named in the squad, adding depth to Bengal’s bowling unit. Shami’s return is expected to provide valuable experience and leadership to Bengal as they aim for a strong campaign in India’s premier 50-over domestic competition.
