After being involved in a good partnership of over 100 runs with Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli and Jaiswal both fell in quick succession during Day 2 of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG. Jaiswal was run out due to a miscommunication with Kohli. After hitting the ball towards mid-on, Jaiswal set off for a run, but Kohli was ball-watching and didn’t respond. As a result, Jaiswal was stranded at the striker’s end while the ball was thrown to wicketkeeper Alex Carey, who broke the stumps.
Kohli, who had been cautious early in his innings, fell to a familiar weakness when Scott Boland bowled a delivery outside the off-stump. Despite the ball being in the sixth-stump channel, Kohli poked at it, edging the ball to the wicketkeeper. Kohli, who had shown promise earlier, was dismissed for 36 runs.
The dismissal came shortly after Jaiswal’s unfortunate run-out, which seemed to affect Kohli’s concentration. This marked another failure for Kohli, continuing a trend in the ongoing series. Despite his early promise, both batsmen’s dismissals left India in a precarious position in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
