The Indian Premier League 2025 has been a thrilling ride so far as with 10 teams, 74 scheduled matches, and two months of non-stop entertainment, the 18th season was packed with excitement and fans were enjoying the close contests and thrilling finishes until tensions rose between India and Pakistan. The situation began to heat up after the tragic incident on 22 April 2025 in Pahalgam, Kashmir and things got worse when the Indian Army responded by targeting terror camps in Pakistan on 7 May while in return, the Pakistan Army retaliated, and the situation at the border became tense.
Due to these developments, the BCCI issued a statement on 9 May 2025, announcing that the IPL 2025 would be suspended for a week. The tournament will only continue once the situation at the border improves and it’s safe to move ahead. So far, 58 matches have been completed. The points table is still wide open, with no team officially qualifying for the playoffs yet. Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru are tied at the top with 16 points each. With six league matches still left, the race to the top four is still alive, and it will be exciting to see who makes it to the playoffs when the tournament resumes.

At the top, Gujarat Titans hold the number one spot with 16 points from 11 matches, having won 8 and lost 3 as their impressive net run rate (NRR) of +0.793, built on scoring 2130 runs in 212.5 overs while conceding 1975 runs in 214.2 overs, gives them a slight edge and hot on their heels are Royal Challengers Bengaluru, also with 16 points from 11 matches, with 8 wins and 3 losses.
RCB’s NRR of +0.482, derived from 1938 runs scored in 205.1 overs against 1863 runs conceded in 207.5 overs, keeps them in second place as both teams are in prime position to finish in the top two, which would earn them a spot in Qualifier 1, potentially facing each other for a direct ticket to the final and their consistent performances and strong NRRs make them favourites to secure these spots.
The race for the third and fourth playoff spots is where things get intense, with five teams still in contention as Punjab Kings sit in third with 15 points from 11 matches, boasting 7 wins, 3 losses, and 1 no-result and their NRR of +0.376 reflects a solid campaign, scoring 1835 runs in 188.1 overs while conceding 1794 runs in 191.2 overs. Mumbai Indians, with 14 points from 12 matches (7 wins, 5 losses), hold the fourth spot, bolstered by an excellent NRR of +1.156, thanks to 2108 runs scored in 221.2 overs against 1993 runs in 238.1 overs while Delhi Capitals, with 13 points from 11 matches (6 wins, 4 losses, 1 no-result), are fifth, with an NRR of +0.362, having scored 1826 runs in 191.1 overs and conceded 1818 runs in 197.5 overs.
Kolkata Knight Riders, the defending champions, are sixth with 11 points from 12 matches (5 wins, 6 losses, 1 no-result) and an NRR of +0.193. They’ve scored 1827 runs in 207.4 overs and conceded 1797 runs in 208.5 overs, but need strong wins in their remaining games to climb higher. Lucknow Super Giants, with 10 points from 11 matches (5 wins, 6 losses), are seventh, hampered by a negative NRR of -0.469, having scored 2065 runs in 215.4 overs while conceding 2141 runs in 213.1 overs. The battle for these two spots is incredibly tight, with every match crucial for these five teams.
At the bottom, Sunrisers Hyderabad (7 points), Rajasthan Royals (6 points), and Chennai Super Kings (6 points) have struggled and are out of playoff contention. The focus now is on the top four, with Gujarat Titans and RCB eyeing Qualifier 1, while Punjab, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Lucknow fight tooth and nail for the remaining playoff berths.
After a total of 58 matches done and dusted, the fans have now got a total of 7 teams still in contention for qualifying for the top 4 spots of the IPL Playoffs. With a total of 12 League matches and 4 matches of the Playoffs left, the BCCI is still looking for a window to cover them off along with providing the Grounds to get off with these matches. The playoff venues are set, with Hyderabad hosting Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator, while Kolkata’s Eden Gardens is slated for Qualifier 2 and the final.

However, if rain threatens the summit clash at Eden Gardens, the final could shift to Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium for a smoother conclusion. The BCCI has scheduled the final for either May 30 (Friday) or June 1 (Sunday), aiming to wrap up the tournament swiftly. To achieve this, the IPL is likely to restart from May 16, with the goal of completing the remaining matches within two weeks. This tight schedule has prompted the BCCI to recall foreign players to ensure team strength for the crucial phase.
