Women’s Big Bash League 2024 witnessed its first-ever Super Over, which also ended in a tie, as Perth Scorchers Women and Sydney Sixers Women shared the spoils, earning one point each. The 34th match of the season, held at Bellerive Oval, Hobart, was an exhilarating encounter.
Batting first, the Scorchers managed 126 runs in 19.2 overs. Beth Mooney anchored the innings with a well-compiled 44 off 37 balls, while Brooke Halliday added a crucial 41 off 32. Ashleigh Gardner was the standout performer with the ball for the Sixers, picking up an impressive 4/21.
In response, Sydney Sixers Women also scored 126/7 in their 20 overs. Captain Ellyse Perry led from the front with a brilliant knock of 67 off 53 balls, including eight boundaries. Hollie Armitage added an unbeaten 14 off 19 balls to steer the Sixers toward a nail-biting finish. Alana King’s exceptional bowling for the Scorchers, with figures of 3/21, kept the contest alive.
In the Super Over, Perry once again shone, smashing 12 runs off 5 balls as the Sixers posted 15/0. The Scorchers matched the total, thanks to Mikayla Hinkley’s blazing 14 off 4 balls, but losing Beth Mooney’s wicket handed the Sixers the edge on boundary count. Perry’s all-round brilliance earned her the Player of the Match award in this thrilling, record-making contest.
