Virat Kohli Pressure Took a Toll on Sam Konstas as He Opens Up About His Debut in International Cricket

In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Sam Konstas made an impactful debut, scoring 60 runs off 65 balls in the Melbourne Test. However, his on-field altercation with Virat Kohli shifted the focus to the Indian team’s reaction to him. Konstas struggled in the following innings, scoring just eight runs, and posted scores of 23 and 22 in the final Test.

Reflecting on his experience, Konstas admitted that the emotions of playing in such a high-pressure environment got the better of him. He acknowledged the challenges of playing in front of large crowds, stating that the upcoming series in Sri Lanka will be a different challenge, especially with their home advantage. He said:

It’s going to be completely different with the crowds [in Sri Lanka]. It was my first time playing with big crowds and maybe the emotions got to me a bit, reflecting on it. But obviously, Sri Lanka is going to be tough to beat in their home conditions. I’m looking forward to that. It’s obviously a huge honour representing my country and touring to Sri Lanka. They’ve welcomed me with open arms and I’m keen to learn and get better. Obviously, we’ve got a strong squad. If I do get the opportunity [to open], hopefully, I’ll take it with both hands. I feel like I’ll just keep backing myself. Obviously, I’m going to adapt with my different methods. I can’t wait for that to happen.

Despite his early struggles, Konstas remains optimistic about his future in international cricket. Although he wasn’t included in Australia’s squad for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, he has been in good form in the Big Bash League, scoring two fifties in four games. Konstas aims to be a regular fixture in the national team, hoping to prove his worth if given the chance in future series.
