Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are considered top contenders for the Test captaincy. Kohli has previously led the team, while Bumrah is the current vice-captain. Cricket legends like Adam Gilchrist and Michael Vaughan have also shared their thoughts on who should take on the role.
Gilchrist supported Kohli in reclaiming the captaincy, but Vaughan disagreed and suggested Bumrah for the role. Despite this, Rohit Sharma has not retired from Test cricket and remains India’s official Test captain for now. The captaincy decision is still under consideration.
Adam Gilchrist shared his concerns about Jasprit Bumrah’s injury history, suggesting that Kohli would be a better choice for the captaincy. Bumrah’s past injuries and potential unavailability could affect India’s performance in crucial moments, making Gilchrist believe that Kohli is more suited for the role. He said:
I don’t know whether (Jasprit) Bumrah should be full-time captain. I reckon that might get a little bit challenging for him. So, who that next captain may be is anyone’s guess, really, whether they go back to Virat (Kohli). I wouldn’t be surprised if he wouldn’t mind doing it.
In Rohit Sharma’s absence due to poor form, Jasprit Bumrah captained India in the fifth Test in Sydney. However, Bumrah had to leave the field during the match after experiencing back spasms. His injury led to his removal from play, leaving India without their captain midway through the game.
