After the retirement of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from Test cricket, former South African batter Herschelle Gibbs stirred debate by declaring Rohit technically superior to Kohli. The two Indian legends stepped away from the longest format ahead of the England series, ending an era in Indian cricket. Gibbs opined that while Kohli is more dominant in white-ball cricket, Rohit has always had better technical foundations, especially in red-ball formats.
The debate gained traction when a fan posted contrasting videos showing Kohli sticking to one shot regardless of results, whereas Rohit experimented with various strokes even during poor form. Gibbs responded that it’s the responsibility of the batting coach to expand a player’s scoring options, but reaffirmed that Rohit was more technically correct than Kohli.
When challenged by fans defending Kohli’s technique, Gibbs doubled down, citing Kohli’s repeated dismissals defending balls on the fourth or fifth stump. He questioned, “You ever seen Rohit defend balls on the 4th or 5th stump?” and insisted that Rohit’s adaptability made him a more complete Test batter.
