After the defeat against India in the Champions Trophy 2025 semifinal, Steve Smith announced his retirement from ODI cricket. The former Australian captain, who played a crucial role in Australia’s 2015 World Cup victory, cited the need for new players to prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup as a key reason for stepping away.
Smith, who captained Australia in 64 ODIs with a 50% win rate, expressed his gratitude for a career filled with “amazing times and wonderful memories”. Under his leadership, Australia secured series wins against England and India last year and completed a clean sweep against West Indies.
Although he is retiring from ODIs, Smith reaffirmed his commitment to Test cricket, looking forward to the World Test Championship final and upcoming series against West Indies and England.
