Marcus Stoinis Announces Shock ODI Retirement Before Champions Trophy

Just before the start of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Marcus Stoinis announced his immediate retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs). The 35-year-old allrounder was initially included in Australia’s preliminary 15-man squad but has now opted to focus solely on T20 cricket at both the international and franchise levels.

Stoinis, who was playing for Durban’s Super Giants in South Africa, reportedly sustained a mild hamstring injury recently. However, his decision to retire from ODIs was primarily driven by a desire to manage his workload in the latter stage of his career. Having played 74 ODIs for Australia, Stoinis amassed 1,495 runs at a strike rate of 93.96 and claimed 48 wickets at an average of 43.12.

He made a significant impact in his second ODI in 2017, scoring a stunning 146* against New Zealand while also taking 3/49. Stoinis was part of Australia’s ODI World Cup squads in 2019 and 2023, contributing to their title-winning campaign in India. Australian head coach Andrew McDonald praised Stoinis for his leadership and contributions over the past decade. While stepping away from ODIs, Stoinis will continue representing Australia in T20s and support the team from the sidelines in the upcoming Champions Trophy.
