For the series against India, the England Cricket Board (ECB) has named Harry Brook as the new white-ball vice-captain. The 25-year-old batter replaces Moeen Ali, who retired from international cricket after being excluded from the home series against Australia. Brook, who has previously captained Yorkshire in domestic tournaments and England during an ODI series against Australia in 2024, will serve as Jos Buttler’s deputy in the five-match T20I and three-match ODI series.
Brook debuted internationally in 2022 and has since emerged as a crucial player across formats. He has scored 719 runs in 20 ODIs and 707 runs in 39 T20Is, with an overall international tally of 2,281 Test runs, including nine centuries and 18 fifties. His consistent performances made him a preferred choice over Liam Livingstone and Phil Salt for the vice-captaincy role.
The upcoming series, beginning January 22 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, marks England’s final preparation before the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. England’s first Champions Trophy match is against Australia on February 19. Under new white-ball coach Brendon McCullum, captain Jos Buttler will play as a specialist batter in the India series. Brook’s leadership will be critical as England aims to finalize their combinations for the high-stakes tournament.
