In the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India has been under constant struggle because of the failures of their star opener and player, Rohit Sharma. After Australia’s commanding 184-run victory in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, India now trails 2-1 in the series.
Rohit’s performance has been a major concern, with the captain managing only 31 runs in the series, averaging a dismal 6.20. This marks the lowest average for a visiting captain in Australia, surpassing West Indies’ Courtney Walsh’s record of 7.75 from the 1996-97 tour.
Throughout the series, Rohit’s struggles with the bat have been glaring, contributing to India’s downfall.
In his last 15 innings, the 37-year-old has accumulated only 164 runs at an average of 10.93. His overall Test performance in 2024 has also been below expectations, with just 619 runs at 24.76 – his lowest average for a calendar year. While his ability in limited-overs cricket remains impressive, his recent form in red-ball cricket has been troubling for the Indian team, especially with India’s hopes of reaching the World Test Championship finals fading.
