In the second Test match between India and Australia at the Adelaide Oval, Yashasvi Jaiswal faced a challenging start, getting dismissed for a golden duck on the very first ball of the match. Mitchell Starc, Australia’s pace spearhead, bowled a full delivery that trapped Jaiswal in front of the leg stump. Attempting a flick through mid-wicket, Jaiswal missed the line completely, losing balance and falling over. Umpire Chris Gaffaney had no hesitation in raising his finger.
This marked Jaiswal’s first golden duck in Test cricket, placing him among six other Indian players who have suffered the same fate, including legends like Sunil Gavaskar and Wasim Jaffer. This was also Jaiswal’s third duck in red-ball cricket, with two previous dismissals against South Africa and Australia.
Interestingly, Starc matched Pedro Collins’ record of taking a wicket on the first ball in Test cricket for the third time. The early dismissal set the tone for a difficult start for India, as Starc and Scott Boland decimated the top order in the opening session. The match, a crucial fixture in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, highlighted Australia’s dominance in pink-ball Test conditions.
