For the 2024-25 cricket season, Australian spinner Matthew Kuhnemann has been cleared by the ICC to continue bowling after undergoing biomechanical testing in Brisbane. The 28-year-old was informed on Wednesday night that his action was deemed legal, relieving him of concerns about having to alter his bowling technique.
Kuhnemann was reported during Australia’s second Test against Sri Lanka, despite having played professional cricket for eight years without previous scrutiny. The left-arm spinner had been a key player in Australia’s 2-0 series sweep of Sri Lanka earlier in the month, taking 16 wickets at an impressive average of 17.18.
His clearance is a significant boost for the Australian Test squad, as he is expected to be part of the upcoming tour of the Caribbean. The testing process involved more than an hour of biomechanical assessment, with sensors placed on his arm to measure elbow extension. The results confirmed that Kuhnemann’s action stayed within the ICC’s 15-degree limit.
Looking ahead, Australian selectors see Kuhnemann as a key player for the 2027 India tour, given his effectiveness as a left-arm spinner. His unique skill set adds valuable variety to the team’s bowling attack.
