Jasprit Bumrah has been tipped to replace Shubman Gill as India’s vice-captain for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025, according to reports. Bumrah’s leadership qualities and consistent performances, especially in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy, have elevated his standing in the Indian team. The 29-year-old pacer led India to a solitary victory in the series and captained during the final Test when Rohit Sharma opted out, showcasing his leadership abilities. As per a report from the Times of India, Bumrah will take over as vice-captain in the 2025 Champions Trophy, provided he is fit for the event.
This move would demote Shubman Gill, who was given the vice-captaincy during the Sri Lanka series, which ended with India’s loss. Bumrah’s rise in the ranks comes after Hardik Pandya’s fall in the leadership pecking order, primarily due to fitness issues. The Champions Trophy will be held in the UAE, marking the tournament’s return after eight years. India, the runners-up in the last edition, will be hoping to avenge their loss to Pakistan in the 2017 final.
