Rishabh Pant Centuries Away from Home

Just a few months later, he smashed an unbeaten 159 against Australia at Sydney in January 2019. That innings helped India dominate the game, but it ended in a draw due to rain. Three years later, Pant made a brilliant century at Cape Town in 2022, scoring 100 in the second innings after a gritty 27 in the first. Despite his efforts, India again ended up on the losing side. Later that year, in July, he played another counter-attacking knock of 146 at Birmingham and followed it up with 57 in the second innings, but England chased down the target and won. In June 2025, Pant achieved something rare, twin centuries in a Test match, scoring 134 and 118 at Leeds. Yet again, the match slipped from India’s grasp.

Vs England in 2018

The first instance where Rishabh Pant scored a century in an away Test but India still lost was during the 5th Test against England at The Oval, September 7-11, 2018. Chasing a daunting 464, India reached 345 in 94.3 overs, falling short by 118 runs. Pant, batting at number six, played a brilliant knock, scoring 114 off 146 balls with 15 fours and 4 sixes at a strike rate of 78.08. His century, which included a 204-run sixth-wicket partnership with KL Rahul (149 off 224), kept India’s hopes alive and Pant reached his fifty off 78 balls and his hundred off 117, showcasing aggressive strokeplay. Despite this, England’s bowlers, led by James Anderson (3/45) and Adil Rashid (2/63), dismantled India’s batting.

Early wickets of Shikhar Dhawan (1), Cheteshwar Pujara (0), and Virat Kohli (0) left India at 2/3, and despite Pant and Rahul’s fightback, the lower order crumbled, with Ravindra Jadeja (13) and Ishant Sharma (5) unable to sustain momentum. Pant fell to Rashid in the 83.6th over, and India were bowled out soon after. England’s first innings of 332, with Jos Buttler’s 89, and their second innings of 423/8, led by Alastair Cook’s 147, set a tough target and Ravindra Jadeja took 4/79 and 3/179, but India’s first innings total of 292 wasn’t enough. Pant’s heroics, though remarkable, couldn’t prevent England’s 4-1 series victory.

Vs Australia in 2019

Coming to the second instance where Rishabh Pant scored a century in an away Test but India didn’t win, the 4th Test against Australia at Sydney, January 3-7, 2019, ended in a draw. India, batting first after winning the toss, posted a massive 622/7 in 167.2 overs. Pant, unbeaten on 159 off 189 balls with 15 fours and 1 six at a strike rate of 84.12, played a key role in the first innings. His 204-run seventh-wicket stand with Ravindra Jadeja (81 off 114) boosted India’s total, alongside Cheteshwar Pujara’s 193 off 373. Pant’s aggressive century came off quick scoring, reaching his fifty in fewer than 100 balls. Despite this, rain and Australia’s resistance led to a draw.

Australia scored 300 in their first innings in 104.5 overs, with Marcus Harris making 79. Kuldeep Yadav took 5/99, and India enforced the follow-on. Australia’s second innings reached 6/0 in 4 overs before rain halted play on day five, with Usman Khawaja (4 not out) and Marcus Harris (2 not out). Nathan Lyon took 4/178 for Australia, while Josh Hazlewood claimed 2/105. India’s bowlers, including Jadeja (2/73) and Jasprit Bumrah (1/62), couldn’t force a result.
