England vs India 1st ODI Preview

The ODI leg of India’s tour of England begins with the opening match at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on 14 July. Both teams enter the series after successful outings in their previous ODI assignments. England claimed a 2-1 series win over Sri Lanka, while India completed a 3-0 sweep against Afghanistan. The contest also follows England’s dominant 4-1 victory in the recent T20I series, adding more interest to the 50-over battle. Despite England’s recent T20I success, India has enjoyed the upper hand in this format against the hosts.

India has won each of the last five ODI meetings between the two sides, highlighting its strong record in recent head-to-head encounters. Several individual contests could shape the series. Virat Kohli has scored 112 runs off 130 balls against Adil Rashid but has also been dismissed by the leg-spinner five times, making it one of the key battles to watch. Joe Root has faced Jasprit Bumrah 39 times in ODIs, scoring 36 runs while losing his wicket on three occasions.

England will once again depend on experienced names such as Joe Root, who has scored 7,577 ODI runs at an average of 49.52, while Adil Rashid remains their leading spin threat with 242 wickets. Harry Brook, Jos Buttler, and Jofra Archer also add quality with bat and ball. India’s batting continues to revolve around Virat Kohli, who has amassed 14,797 ODI runs at an average of 58.71.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill strengthen the top order, while Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, and Kuldeep Yadav provide a reliable bowling attack. Edgbaston has generally favoured teams chasing, with 31 wins for sides bowling first compared to 28 for teams batting first. The average first-innings score is 235, while the second-innings average is 188. Weather conditions are expected to remain clear, setting up an uninterrupted start to what promises to be a competitive ODI series between two experienced sides.
