The Australian team is all set to tour Sri Lanka after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-2025, and David Warner has voiced his opinion on Glenn Maxwell’s potential Test comeback. Warner believes Maxwell should not be considered for selection in the Test squad, particularly for the crucial series against Sri Lanka. He argued that Maxwell, who last played Test cricket in 2017, has not earned a recall due to his lack of recent appearances in Sheffield Shield, Australia’s premier first-class competition.
Warner emphasized that players must show commitment to four-day cricket if they want a chance in the Test team. On Maxwell, he said:
If you’re not being picked for your Shield team, then why do you deserve it? You’ve got to actually want it, to want to play four-day cricket. Unless he’s putting his hand up, he’s playing all the club cricket stuff and all that, to want to play Test cricket. He in my (opinion), doesn’t deserve that opportunity.
Maxwell, despite a modest Test average of 26.33 from seven matches, expressed interest in playing Test cricket again, especially for the Sri Lankan tour. However, his aspirations hit a setback due to a hamstring injury during the white-ball series against Pakistan, preventing him from playing recent Shield matches.
