CSK Eyes 17-Year-Old Ayush Mhatre as Top-Order Struggles in IPL 2025

With the IPL 2025 season underway, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have taken a bold step to address their top-order struggles by calling 17-year-old Mumbai opener Ayush Mhatre for trials at Chepauk Stadium. Mhatre, who went unsold in the 2025 mega auction, has been a standout performer in domestic cricket. He scored 458 runs in seven matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 at an impressive average of 65.42, including two centuries and a fifty. In the Ranji Trophy, he accumulated 471 runs in eight matches, with a top score of 176.

CSK’s decision comes amid poor performances from their openers, Rachin Ravindra and Rahul Tripathi, while Ruturaj Gaikwad has been pushed to No. 3. Currently, CSK has one win and two losses, placing them seventh on the points table.

The franchise has clarified that Mhatre’s trial does not indicate any immediate squad change unless injuries arise. Meanwhile, MS Dhoni’s fitness remains a concern, with speculation over his batting position. After a narrow six-run loss to Rajasthan Royals, CSK will face Delhi Capitals on April 5 at home, hoping for a turnaround.
