Australia’s left-arm pacer Jason Behrendorff has announced his retirement from state cricket after a 16-year career with Western Australia. However, the 34-year-old will continue playing T20 franchise cricket, having recently signed a three-year deal with Melbourne Renegades. Behrendorff played 17 T20Is for Australia, with his last appearance coming against West Indies in Perth a year ago, and also featured in 12 ODIs from 2019 to 2022.
Throughout his career, he won five One-Day Cup titles with WA, taking 75 wickets in the format. In first-class cricket, he claimed 126 wickets at an impressive average of 23.85 from 31 matches. His most remarkable performance came in 2017 when he took 9 for 37 against Victoria, finishing with match figures of 14 for 89, the second-best in WA’s history. Injuries forced him to give up red-ball cricket after the 2017-18 season.
Internationally, Behrendorff’s standout moment was a five-wicket haul against England at Lord’s in the 2019 World Cup. He also had success in the IPL, taking 14 wickets for Mumbai Indians in 2023. While focusing on franchise cricket, Behrendorff now aims to spend more time with his family, embracing a new chapter beyond state cricket.
