Adam Gilchrist Doubts Rohit Sharma’s Test Future and Predicts Possible Retirement After ICC Champions Trophy 2025

Following the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Adam Gilchrist suggested that India may change their Test captain. He predicted that either Jasprit Bumrah or Virat Kohli could take over as captain during India’s next series against England in June 2025.

After the disappointing Australia tour, there are doubts about whether the 37-year-old Rohit Sharma will be included in India’s squad for the upcoming Test series in England, which marks the start of the new World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. Gilchrist also voiced concerns about Rohit’s future in Test cricket. He said:

I don’t see Rohit Sharma going to England. I just felt that he says he will assess it when he gets home. I mean, the first thing he will be met with when he gets home is a two-month-old baby that he has to change the nappies on. Now that might incentivize him to go to England. But I know I don’t; I don’t see him pressing on. I think he’ll probably have a crack at the Champions Trophy, and that might be. That might see him out.

Gilchrist suggested that the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 might be Rohit Sharma’s final tournament. He believes Rohit won’t extend his Test career until the England tour but will have a clearer idea about his future after reflecting on his performance during the break.
