After retiring from international cricket four years ago, AB de Villiers has announced his much-awaited return to the game. Widely recognized as one of the most innovative and dynamic cricketers in history, de Villiers will captain the Game Changers South Africa Champions in the second edition of the World Championship of Legends (WCL), a T20 tournament featuring retired and non-contracted cricket legends.
During his announcement, de Villiers reflected on his decision, saying:
Four years ago, I retired from all cricket because I just didn’t feel the urge to play anymore. Well, time has passed, and my young sons have started playing the game. We’ve been playing more and more often in the garden, and, well, it feels as though some kind of flame has been lit again. So I am heading back to the gym and the nets, and I’ll be ready for WCL in July.
However, the passion reignited as he started playing cricket in the garden with his sons, leading him to prepare for a comeback.
The Game Changers, featuring stars like Jacques Kallis, Herschelle Gibbs, Dale Steyn, and Imran Tahir in the inaugural season, will now look to de Villiers for leadership. Known for his fearless batting and unmatched versatility, his return has excited fans globally. The WCL, set to take place in July, promises a nostalgic yet thrilling experience for cricket enthusiasts, with de Villiers aiming to bring his trademark energy back to the field.
